The ISN Renal Disaster Relief Task Force (RDRTF) has released its first report following the earthquake that struck Ecuador on April 17, 2016.

Chair of RDRTF Wim Van Biesen stated that the committee had been in contact with local ISN representatives in the region, the national nephrology society of Ecuador, and some local nephrologists (Cristobal Santacruz, Fabian Ortiz and Abdias Hurtado Arestegui).

Van Biesen said: “All are already very active in scouting for potential crush victims and distributing the field version of the crush guidelines.”

According to the report, there are some one thousand chronic hemodialysis patients in the disaster area and surroundings.

He added: “To our information, all chronic units are active and working regular schedules. No news has been issued regarding a lack of supplies. So far, our local logistics partner, Medicins Sans Frontieres did not obtain permission to enter the disaster area. It is still undecided at this stage whether we as RDRTF will delegate someone as a scout to this team.”
