Following the earthquake that struck central Italy on August 24, 2016, the ISN Renal Disaster Relief Task Force (RDRTF) issued its response to the disaster and a status update on kidney patients in the region.
ISN RDRTF Chair Wim Van Biesen said that he had been in contact with the President of the Italian Society of Nephrology and Past ISN President Giuseppe Remuzzi at the Mario Negri Institute (Bergamo), who both gave him an update.
According to them, a number of dialysis beds have been made available in Tuscany for treating acute cases and patients on RDT with complications or injuries. There are also currently enough dialysis facilities in Rome.
No dialysis centers were damaged by the earthquake and, for now, no evidence of crush syndrome has been reported. All chronic units seem to be active and working regular schedules.
