ISN Educational Ambassador Leads Training on Urinary Sediment Analysis in Benin
The ISN supported ISN Educational Ambassador Dr. Giovanni B. Fogazzi (Italy) as the key presenter at the course “What the Urinary Sediment Can Tell Nephrologists,” which was held at Cotonou in Benin Republic, West Africa from May 13-15, 2024. Past ISN Fellow Dr. Francis Lalya and ISN member Dr. Jacques Vigan (both from Benin) also presented at the event.

The course was organized in response to the need for adequate training in urinary sediment (U-sed) examination techniques. According to Dr. Fogazzi, U-sed examinations offer advantages compared to other diagnostic tools: They can be carried out using instruments widely available in low-income countries, are low-cost for health centers and patients, and rapidly provide clinical information.

The two-day course included a hands-on session on correctly using and interpreting reagent strips for urinalysis and microscopic examinations of sediment particles in urine. Dr. Fogazzi noted a significant increase in the accuracy of particle identification by participants compared to the pre-test. He commented, “I believe this will lead to more requests for U-sed examinations, improving their quality and benefiting patients.”
