European Union (EU)

The ISN advocates at the European Union (EU) level for specific EU policies and strategies related to kidney health. Although in the EU, health is a competency of each individual Member State, the EU can complement Member States’ policies with the provision of funding for health-related projects and by facilitating cooperation between them. The EU has also legislative power in certain health-related matters, as for example regarding the measures dealing with the quality and safety of organs and substances of human origin. It also develops programs, such as Horizon Europe 2021-2027 and EU4Health 2021-2027, which provide funding to eligible entities, organisations and NGOs from EU countries, or non-EU countries associated to the programme, in the healthcare and research field. Funding is also provided for development programs in Low- and Middle-Income countries, as well as for humanitarian emergencies.

On our work with the European Union, we partner with the European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA) to ensure that kidney disease is at the top of the EU priorities.
