Read the ISN Global Kidney Policy Forum 2021 Report

The ISN is pleased to present the report, “Global Kidney Policy Forum 2021: Focus on North America and the Caribbean.

The report highlights the main kidney health challenges and opportunities affecting the region as outlined at the Global Kidney Policy Forum (GKPF), hosted during ISN’s Virtual World Congress of Nephrology (VWCN’21).

The GKPF, based on the 12 recommendations to global kidney health, presented an international view on kidney health and proposed concrete policies to improve the delivery of and access to kidney care. The forum analyzed pan-regional challenges and solutions to kidney care and provided an in-depth focus on the impact of COVID-19 and specific issues facing indigenous and minority populations.

Keynote speaker Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization, recommended successfully meeting the challenges of kidney care by tackling risk factors head-on. Fellow keynote speaker Sir George Alleyne, Director Emeritus of Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), suggested that the non-communicable disease (NCD) community provoke outrage at the social inequalities within NCD and CKD treatment.

With this in mind, the ISN will be working with partners in the region to motivate policymakers and politicians to become agents of change in delivering equitable access to kidney care. The emphasis will be on translating the forum’s recommendations into reality to address the significant variations in the accessibility, affordability, and quality of care throughout the region.
