2020 Impact Factors Position Kidney International as the Top Journal Publishing Original Research in Nephrology

Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR) have released their annual Impact Factors (IF) for 2020. Kidney International (KI) and Kidney International Reports (KIR) have increased their IFs:

  • KI’s IF of 10.612, increased from 8.945 in 2019, establishes it as the top journal publishing original research in nephrology.
  • KIR’s IF is 4.164, increased from 3.374, its first IF, in 2019.

The ISN thanks and congratulates the editorial and publishing teams at KI and KIR and asked them to comment on this outstanding success:

Pierre Ronco, chief editor at KI, thanked the authors and reviewers for the quality of the journal as well as the dedicated readership, commenting, “It is truly amazing to see how KI has influenced nephrology practice in every corner of the world. The editors strongly feel that their mission is all about quality evidence dissemination for those hardest to reach.”

Ronco paid homage to his predecessors, commenting, “Qais [Al-Awqati] and Detlef [Schlöndorff] have been the architects of KI’s renaissance. Without their creativity, hard work, and support, this achievement would never have been possible. Today, the team of editors, managers, and publishers have a moving thought for Detlef who opened the way to this achievement.”

Looking to the future, Ronco mentioned the overwhelming response to the recent launch of the ISN-KI Editorial Fellowship, which will provide ample training opportunities for early-career professionals to review manuscripts and manage editorial responsibilities in a top-ranked nephrology journal.

Jai Radhakrishnan, chief editor at KIR, outlined the journal’s progress: “KI Reports is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. Our growth has been consistent, from publishing six articles in our first issue in May 2016, we now include around 40 articles in each edition.”

Radhakrishnan highlighted the expansion of the editorial team and the journal’s new approach to disseminating information: “We have upgraded our visual abstracts and social media presence – including MedTwitter, which is attracting an increasing number of readers worldwide.”
